Painting Tools

Lesson 5

For this exercise I produced my own brush and pattern. I did this by drawing a sun and then going to edit - define brush prefect. To make a pattern I drew using my new sun brush and went to edit - define pattern. I then used these tools by filling in the man's shirt using the brush and his tie using the pattern.

This is a gradient I produced using the Gradient tool.

I used the smudge tool to make it appear like the clock is melting.

I used the blur tool to give the effect of shallow depth of field.

I used the dodge, burn and sponge tool to brighten up this countryside scene.

I used the pattern stamp tool to change this woman's dress.

On this image I used the clone tool to remove all of the penguins out of this picture. You really had to pay attention to what area you were cloning as to get the right shade of sand.

I added a sunset onto this image by cloning onto a new layer. I did this by selecting the image of the sunset using alt-click and using the clone tool to transfer it onto the penguin layer. I tidied up the join line between the sky and buildings using the eraser.  I made it easier to do this by lowering the opacity so I could see the layer below.

Here I used the healing brush tool to remove the blemishes from this woman's skin.

Here I used the patch tool to remove the lines on Glenn Close's face.

For this exercise I was required to restore this old photograph by removing the creases. I did this by using the healing brush tool, spot healing brush tool and the patch tool. I found this exercise challenging and despite me spending a long time of my results were by no means perfect.

Selections

Lesson 3

For this exercise I used the magnetic lasso tool to select each bird and fill them with colour.

For this exercise I selected a tree using the quick selection tool. I then copied and pasted it and enlarged it using free transform (command T) to create a forest in the desert!

For this exercise I selected each window using the rectangle marquee tool. I then selected 3 additional pictures and pasted them into the photo. I resized the pictures using free transform (command T.)

For this exercise I selected the head on this painting using the elliptical marquee tool. I then inverted the selection and filled the background with colour using the feather option.

For this exercise I selected the skin of the model using quick mask . I then inverted it and used a stroke line to show the outline.

For this exercise I selected the front dancer using quick mask. I then copied and pasted the dancer to the front of the line and changed the size to correspond with the others using free transform (command T.)

For this exercise I selected the hair of the model using quick mask. I then filled in the image with an alternative colour.

Lesson 4
For this exercise I  cut out the rim of the wheel using the elliptical marquee tool. I altered the size and position of the circle using alt and space. The cut out shows 3 different selections.

For this exercise I separated the fence from its background. To do this I selected it using the polygonal lasso tool pasted it onto a new layer.

For this exercise I used the quick selection tool to select the man. I then removed him from the background by pasting onto a new layer. I then selected certain areas which were underexposed using quick mask and lightened them using levels.

The aim of this exercise was to put the wasp onto this sand background. To do this I selected the outline of the body of the wasp using quick mask. To save time I then selected the middle area with the magic wand tool and filled the rest of it in so it was also selected. Because the wings were see-through I selected them with the quick mask using a mid-tone grey so the opacity was less. I then pasted into the sand layer.

Using a Graphics Tablet

Lesson 1

This exercise was designed to improve our hand-eye co-ordination when using a graphics tablet. I felt this exercise was alot harder than it looks! I found it especially difficult to stay in the lines at the corners of the boxes.

Lesson 2

This exercise was designed to improve our pen control and to teach on using sensitivity to control the pressure of the line. I found it very difficult at first but got easier as I did more. The most difficult bits were where the letter had long thin lines to follow.

This exercise combined the skills we'd learnt previously: hand-eye co-ordination, pen control and sensitivity. I think the result really shows how much I have come on with using a graphics tablet and how it is much better than just using the mouse.
